Coppola, what a storyteller. Pictures from the evening at Dal Verme

It would be easy to say that it was a night like only in movies. Of course, the meeting with Francis Ford Coppola kept 1600 people at Teatro Dal Verme (sold out) nailed to their seats, not to mention the many connected in streaming on social networks, just like with all silver screen masterpieces. The six-time Academy Award winner – invited in Milan by Regione Basilicata in partnership with Matera 2019, Lucana Film Commission, Meet the Media Guru and in collaboration with APT Basilicata and Palazzo Margherita – treated the audience to two hours of generous and entertaining storytelling, moving from family stories, thoughts about Italy, cinema, music and international politics, not to mention suggestions, jokes and a few criticisms to our Country, for which he declared his pride and love.

Completely upsetting the evening’s programme, Coppola “offered” himself completely to the audience, answering their questions without reserves moving from the story of his grandfather, an emigrant out of Bernalda, near Matera, to the U.S. To seek fortune, to the future of cinema and the digital opportunity. In between there was some time for a genuine and frank declaration of love for Lucania, the land of his ancestors, which he visits any time he can with his children and grandchildren. Right in Bernalda, Coppola purchased and renovated Palazzo Margherita, a small luxury resort meant to provide its guests the true hospitality of Lucania.

Passionate and driven, the director did not fail to impress also for his “creative” attire: he was wearing two socks of different colours, which went immediately viral on social networks. And social networks brought #meetCoppolathe evening’s hashtag, at the first place in the Italian trending topic list thanks to over 4,500 contributions on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

The event with Francis Ford Coppola “Back to my roots to encounter the future: my Basilicata” was promoted by Regione Basilicata in partnership with Matera 2019, Lucana Film Commission, Meet the Media Guru and with the collaboration of APT Basilicata and Palazzo Margherita. The initiative is held under the patronage of Milan Metropolitan City and the support of the City of Matera. The event is part of the Expo in Città programme.
