CALL FOR AUGE NEXT – Augmented Europe Fellowships!

Digital Artists-in-Residency Programme

With the support of the European Union’s Creative Europe programme, AUGE NEXT cooperation project launches four Fellowship Programmes for Digital Artists-in-Residency organized by the project partners in four European countries: Italy, Latvia, Germany, and Greece.
Each of the four AUGE NEXT Fellowship Programmes consists of a 6-month Prototyping & Production period (September 1, 2023 – February 28, 2024) including Onsite Residency (up to 2 weeks long) taking place in one of the hosting countries.

AUGE NEXT Fellowship Programmes are designed to support young European artists working in various fields of digital media art: immersive art (XR/AR/VR), data visualization and sonification, AI/ML, and others.

Implementation and Timeline

Each of the four Fellowship Programmes will be organized by one of the host institutions in Milan, Riga, Berlin and Athens:

MEET Digital Culture Center, Milan, Italy

RIXC Centre for New Media Culture, Riga, Latvia

Public Art Lab, Berlin, Germany

Athens Digital Arts Festival (ADAF), Athens, Greece

All four Fellowship Programmes will be implemented during the time period from September 1, 2023 – February 28, 2024, consisting of two main activities:

1)  Onsite Residency (up to 2 weeks long):
taking place in the hosting country with a purpose to participate in encountering events with local youngsters and young activists, and sharing the creation process, as well as to develop and discuss the ideas for new digital art productions (to be created as a part of this programme),
Dates for Onsite Residency will be specified on individual agreements with host institutions.

2) 6-month Prototyping & Production process will take place remotely (from September 1, 2023 – February 28, 2024) in close collaboration with the hosting institution, who will coordinate virtual meetings and will support productions of new digital artworks.

Each of the four Fellowship Programmes will result in new digital artworks that will be exhibited locally at the respective host institutions, as well as in an international group exhibition at the MEET Digital Culture Center in Milan as part of the closing event of AUGE NEXT.
Artists will be selected by an international jury and the selected artists will be notified by August 1, 2023.

Challenges

When applying, the artist must choose the challenge they want to address and the appropriate host institution:

  • Challenge 1: Digital Utopia between human intelligence, AI and Nature: is a symbiosis possible? Hosted by MEET (Milan, Italy)
  • Challenge 2: Climate, Immersive Art and Energy. Hosted by RIXC (Riga, Latvia)
  • Challenge 3: Nature | Data | Narratives for climate engagement. Hosted by PAL (Berlin, Germany)
  • Challenge 4: Expanded Metaverse: Meta-realities and future scenarios. Hosted by ADAF (Athens, Greece)

The above four challenges were identified and developed during the previous activity of the AUGE NEXT project – four parallel hybrid Artathon events on 25 November 2022, online and on-site, jointly organised by all partners in their respective locations – Milan, Berlin, Athens and Riga/Liepaja. The AUGE NEXT Artathon brought together more than 300 participants, artists and young activists from four European countries, who exchanged ideas, experiences and strategies on four key challenges related to the shared vision of Europe, i.e. the dream of a future Europe.

Budget

Each of the four Fellowship Programmes will provide the selected artists with a fee of €4,000 (gross amount, i.e. including taxes if applicable, for creating new digital artwork over the 6-month period). In addition to the fee, the artist will be provided with a production budget (up to a max of €4,000, covering the production costs of the digital artwork and showcasing of the artwork in the venue of the hosting institution) and travel and accommodation budget of up to a max of €2,000 for up to 2-week onsite residency in hosting country and up to 3 days stay in Milan during the final event.
