Audiovisual performance – 2026
Duration: 35–50 min
In collaboration with Basemental
Straight from major international festivals and institutions such as Tate Modern, Ars Electronica, and MUTEK, the visionary Japanese media artist Ryoichi Kurokawa arrives in Milan for an extraordinary live set as part of The New Atlas of Digital Art 2026.
One of the most influential artists on the contemporary scene, Kurokawa explores the boundary between natural phenomena and digital structures in his performances, creating immersive works in which sound, image, space, and time merge. At MEET, he will perform with nD.
THE LIVE SET
“nD” is an audiovisual performance and the third iteration of the audiovisual project “cm:av_c,” developed over many years. In this work, the phenomena of sound and vision, the modes of abstraction and concreteness, and the qualities of significance and insignificance are embodied in the continuous fluctuation between duality and non-duality. The work is not conceived solely to present opposition or difference, but rather as a space where our perception oscillates between separation and inseparability. By treating and blending sound and image on an abstract level, it creates an intense audiovisual experience that simultaneously stimulates sight and hearing. This pure audiovisual expression, stripped of meaning, frees the audience from the constraints of interpretation, guiding them toward a more direct and sensory experience.
This project, “cm:av_c,” a long-standing endeavor dating back to the early stages of Kurokawa’s career, strongly reflects his unique and iconic artistic language. The first version, “cm:av_c,” debuted in 2005 and has since been presented around the world, including at the Tate Modern (United Kingdom), Ars Electronica (Austria), and MUTEK (Canada). In 2011, the second version, “syn_ [ cm:av_c 2 ],” was released and has been performed in over 20 countries over the course of several years. “nD [ cm:av_c 3 ]” is the third version, representing a further evolution of this project.
BIO
Japanese audiovisual artist and composer. He creates temporal sculptures by blending field recordings and digital structures, architecturally reconstructing the audiovisual phenomenon in real time. His works—installations, live performances, and recordings—have been presented at international venues including the Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Venice Biennale, the Palais de Tokyo, Ars Electronica, MUTEK, YCAM, EMPAC, and Sonar. In 2010, he received the Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica in the Digital Music & Sound Art category. *Subassembly*, the work presented at the festival, is a project co-produced by MUTEK, Stereolux/Scopitone, and TodaysArt that explores the relationship between nature and human construction on an architectural scale. → ryoichikurokawa.com
